A passing Language Proficiency Assessment can demonstrate your language abilities to others in an official format. For some companies, this can mean a pay raise for a bilingual employee. Also, the assessment provides validity to any work you may be doing in a language other than your primary language. Note that even if the assessment determines you are proficiently bilingual, this does not mean you are a certified interpreter. See the Medical Interpreter Program for more information on interpretation training.
The assessment has a 30-minute written exam in English and a 30-minute written exam in another language. Also, a 30-minute oral exam, totaling one hour and 30 minutes. To arrange for a language assessment normally takes around two weeks depending on the student’s availability.
The assessment consists of two parts, a written exam and an oral exam. The written exam has two parts an English section and section in the other language you are testing in. The exams assess a person’s skills in content, context, accuracy, and discourse.
The Language Proficiency Assessment (LPA) test individuals language proficiency through an intense three level testing. Levels 1 and 2 are both online. The first measures client's fluency in English, second measures fluency of a different language. If client passes both of these with an 80% or better, HEC's oral assessor provides real-life interpretation testing via
telecommunication. Successfully passing all three levels demonstrates bilingual fluency. To gain skills and certification as a Medical Interpreter see Medical Interpreter Program.
